The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning of isolated heavy rains and extreme temperatures in several regions from May 6 to 12.
In a statement on Monday, the department noted that areas likely to experience intense downpours include the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Western, North-Western, Rift Valley, and Coast.
“These rains will be scattered but could be intense in isolated areas. We urge Kenyans to plan ahead and stay safe,” the department said.
At the same time, daytime temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C in coastal counties and parts of North-Eastern and North-Western Kenya, while nighttime lows may fall below 10°C in the Central Highlands, Central Rift Valley, and areas near Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The advisory comes as the March-April-May long rains season continues, with shifting rainfall patterns and uneven distribution across counties.
Last week, only a few areas received significant rainfall, while coastal regions such as Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu recorded scorching daytime temperatures. Sunny and dry conditions dominated southeastern counties like Kitui, Machakos, and Taita-Taveta, with only occasional light showers.
“We’re still in the long rains season, and weather patterns can shift quickly. Communities should remain alert, especially in areas prone to flash floods or temperature-sensitive livelihoods,” the department cautioned.
The weatherman urged Kenyans—especially farmers, motorists, and residents in vulnerable regions—to monitor updates and follow safety guidance from authorities.
