It is now official—the second leg of the Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards will be staged at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday, May 11.
After weeks of uncertainty over the venue, Gor Mahia confirmed the news on Tuesday through a statement shared on their official X (formerly Twitter) account. The club, which will host the match, shared photos of its officials inspecting the stadium.
“Club officials: Vice Chair Sally Bolo, Secretary General Nick Arum and Treasurer Gerphas Okuku at Kasarani Stadium to check on the venue that will stage the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday. All set for the big match,” read the post.
The clash will mark the 97th edition of Kenya’s most anticipated football fixture. It comes just over a month since the two arch-rivals met in a goalless draw during the first leg held at Nyayo Stadium on March 30.
This weekend’s game will also be the first to be held at Kasarani since it was closed in August 2023 for renovations ahead of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). With the upgrades now complete, the Mashemeji Derby will serve as a test event for the revamped stadium.
The match carries significant weight for Gor Mahia, who are in a tight title race. K’Ogalo are second in the FKF Premier League with 53 points, just two behind leaders Kenya Police FC. AFC Leopards, currently sixth with 42 points, will be looking to shake up the standings with five games left in the season.
