President William Ruto’s decision to endorse former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) has sparked debate in Kenya.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, speaking on February 9, shed light on the reasoning behind Kenya’s choice.
He emphasized that the selection was based on the significance of the AUC role, which involves more than 16 key functions, primarily advocating for Africa’s interests on the global stage.
Sing’Oei noted that the AU’s membership in influential global groups, such as the G20, requires a leader capable of effectively representing Africa’s interests. He highlighted the AU’s participation in international forums, including the China-Africa Forum, T-Card with Japan, and the U.S.-Africa Summit, where critical continental matters are discussed.
According to Sing’Oei, the AUC Chairperson must be a strong, visionary, and diplomatic leader who can withstand political pressures and navigate global negotiations with confidence.
He stated that Ruto’s endorsement of Raila was a calculated decision aimed at ensuring Africa has a dynamic and influential voice in shaping its future.
“It requires a leader who will give the office weight and credibility. In selecting Raila, Ruto recognized the need for a strong figure who can drive Africa’s narrative in the 21st century,” Sing’Oei stated.
Sing’Oei further justified Kenya’s backing of Raila, describing him as a well-rounded leader who embodies Africa’s rising self-confidence. He noted that Raila’s experience in politics, diplomacy, and governance makes him uniquely qualified for the position.
“This role is not just for a bureaucrat; it demands a leader who can navigate political, technical, and diplomatic landscapes seamlessly. Raila fits that profile, making him the right choice,” he explained.
The Principal Secretary also pointed out that since the African Union transitioned from the Organization of African Unity (OAU), no leader from East Africa has held the top seat. He recalled that the last time the region produced an AUC head was during the tenure of Tanzanian diplomat Salim Ahmed Salim under the OAU.
“For the past 25 years, the AU has not been led by someone from East Africa. It is now time for the region to take up the mantle, and Kenya is a key player in this regard,” he said.
Sing’Oei underscored Kenya’s strategic importance in the region, citing its role in peace negotiations, economic support for neighboring countries, and its burden in hosting refugees. These factors, he argued, made Kenya a strong candidate to produce the next AUC Chairperson.
“In making this decision, we had to ask ourselves—if it’s Kenya’s turn, then which Kenyan? Raila emerged as the best-suited leader for this position,” he stated.
With the AUC elections scheduled for February 15, 2025, during the AU Summit, Raila’s candidacy will be closely watched as Africa prepares to elect its next continental leader.
