Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has explained the reasons behind his visits to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party headquarters one in every two weeks, where he would spend at least an hour each time, during his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary.
Speaking at the UDA headquarters on Monday after being appointed Deputy Party Leader, Kindiki clarified that his visits were intended to ensure the safety and operational readiness of the offices used by the party leader, President William Ruto.
“I have been coming here, of course, with the permission of the party leadership, but in a discrete manner for two reasons.I’ve been coming here at least once every two weeks for an hour or so, is because I was the interior minister, and I needed to know that this place is secure because the head of state is our party leader, and he uses this facility and therefore, I needed to check from time to time, this facility is secure for the Commander-in-Chief,” Kindiki said.
In addition to his role in ensuring security, Kindiki explained that he was fulfilling responsibilities as the President’s chief agent from the 2022 presidential election. According to Kindiki, his periodic visits were necessary to safeguard sensitive materials and verify the integrity of official records at the UDA offices.
“I used to come here as a chief agent of the President to make sure the paperwork is still there, that nobody has interfered with the files, and that our liaison with the registrar of political parties remains intact,” he said, adding that it was his duty to oversee this role until a new chief agent is appointed
“Of course, there wasn’t much work after the Supreme Court determined the validity of the election. But it is good manners and good practice that the parties, Presidential Chief agent must hover around until another one is appointed.”
