DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala

A warrant of arrest has been issued for Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala following a political gathering in Kakamega County that allegedly disrupted local transport and business activities.

The meeting, held on Saturday, reportedly brought operations in parts of Kakamega to a standstill. Western Region Police Commander Issa Mohamed confirmed the development on Monday, saying Malala is required to present himself to the police within 72 hours to record a statement regarding the incident.

“Roads were closed for two to three hours, and there was no business going on. People feared looting and started closing their shops,” said Mohamed. He further alleged that police intercepted Malala’s vehicle, which was being driven on the wrong side of the road at high speed. The driver reportedly jumped out and attempted to flee.

As investigations continue, police have impounded three vehicles linked to the former senator. Authorities are also probing whether the political meeting violated any laws.

The incident comes amid increasing scrutiny of political gatherings ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Malala, known for his vocal political stance, has yet to respond publicly to the warrant.

This is not the first time Malala has found himself on the wrong side of the law. In April 2025, he was arrested outside Kirobon Girls High School in Nakuru County, where he had gone to oversee rehearsals for a play he scripted titled Echoes of War. The play, performed by Butere Girls High School, sparked controversy for its critical portrayal of government actions.

Despite a court order allowing the performance, police blocked Malala’s entry to the school and later detained him overnight at Eldama Ravine Police Station. He was released the following day without charge.

Shortly after the incident, Malala was reportedly assaulted at a club in Nakuru town. Unknown individuals attacked him and vandalised his Toyota Land Cruiser.
