why Cardinal Njue will be Out of new pope Election Despite Official Invitation

Date:

The Archdiocese of Nairobi has confirmed that Cardinal John Njue will not be attending the 2025 conclave in Rome due to health complications.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 6, Archbishop Philip Anyolo explained that while Cardinal Njue is eligible to vote and had received an official invitation through the Apostolic Nunciature, he will not make the trip owing to his current medical condition.

Responding to growing public inquiries, Archbishop Anyolo stated that the decision had been officially communicated to the Vatican, adding that it was made in consultation with the Apostolic Nuncio and the Archdiocese.

“I confirm that although His Eminence was invited and is qualified to take part in the conclave beginning May 7, 2025, his current health status will not allow him to travel to Rome,” the statement read in part.

He urged Kenyans to offer prayers for the cardinals, who are tasked with selecting the next leader of the Catholic Church following the death of Pope Francis on Easter Monday.

The Vatican has outlined that the process will begin with a Latin prayer service, followed by an oath from the cardinals and a sermon by Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa. The cardinals will then proceed to vote in a closed-door session inside the Sistine Chapel.

The world will be watching for the traditional white smoke from the chapel chimney—signaling the election of a new Pope.
