Kenya and political fanatics will on this weekend be thrown into a state of anticipation and tension as one of the country’s political heavyweights and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be facing two other candidates in a fierce race for the chairmanship of African Union (AU) Commission.
The election which is set to be partaken by Heads of States from all the qualifying member states in the continent is slated to be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 15 and 16.
With his 80 years of age, Raila Odinga is a distinguishable political figure in Kenya and has played a central role in the country’s politics for decades, serving as Prime Minister (2008–2013), leading multiple presidential campaigns, and championing democratic reforms, devolution, and infrastructure development.

Mahamoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti:
The 60 years old has been Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2005, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving foreign ministers. Throughout his tenure, he has been instrumental in positioning Djibouti as a strategic hub in the Horn of Africa, leveraging its geographic location to foster international partnerships.
Youssouf has played a key role in mediating regional conflicts and has been a vocal advocate for African interests on the global stage. His diplomatic efforts have contributed to Djibouti’s stability and its emergence as a center for international military cooperation and trade.
Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar:
The 65 years old served as Madagascar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2019 and 2022 where he focused on strengthening the country’s international relations and promoting economic development. His tenure was marked by efforts to re-engage with international partners and attract foreign investment following periods of political instability in Madagascar.
However, Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina fired him after he voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s annexation of four Ukrainian regions.
Randriamandrato has emphasized the importance of regional integration and has been involved in initiatives aimed at enhancing cooperation within the Indian Ocean region. His background in economics and public administration has informed his approach to leveraging Madagascar’s unique biodiversity and cultural heritage for sustainable development.
