National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel to accelerate the recruitment of new IEBC commissioners.

In a statement issued on Monday, January 27, 2025, Wetang’ula emphasized that the task of appointing the IEBC chairperson and other commissioners is of critical national importance.

“Given the immense significance of this matter to the country, I urge the selection panel to expedite and finalize the recruitment process of the IEBC commissioners as soon as possible, in accordance with the law,” said Wetang’ula.

The Speaker further instructed Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) Secretary Jeremiah Nyegenye to ensure the necessary support for the selection panel to fulfill its mandate.

“I have communicated to the Secretary of the Parliamentary Service Commission, Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye, to arrange all required facilities and services to facilitate the work of the panel as prescribed by the law,” he added.

Wetang’ula noted that the PSC is legally obligated to provide secretariat services, logistical support, and funding for the selection panel’s operations.

The statement follows President William Ruto’s appointment of nine individuals to the IEBC selection panel. The panel members include Kiome Lindah Gakii, Oloo Adams, James Evans Misati, Nicodemus Kipchirchir Bore, Koki Muli Grignon, Carolene Kituku, Tanui Andrew Kipkoech, Nelson Makanda, and Fatuma Saman.

Operating under the provisions of Article 250 of the Constitution and the IEBC Act, the selection panel is tasked with ensuring the appointment of commissioners who are impartial, competent, and capable of overseeing free and fair elections.

The Speaker’s remarks underline the urgency of reconstituting the electoral body ahead of key national elections and other democratic processes.
