The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has issued a 7-day weather forecast covering the period from December 24 to December 30, 2024.

In a report released on December 23, Kenya Met indicated that some regions would continue experiencing rainfall and storms, especially during the early part of the week. However, the department noted that rainfall is expected to decrease significantly after Boxing Day, with most parts of the country transitioning to sunny and dry conditions.

“Rainfall is expected to reduce significantly after Boxing Day, with much of the country transitioning to sunny and dry conditions. However, during the start of the week, parts of Western Kenya, the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley, South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Coast may still experience some showers,” read part of the statement.

Rainfall Distribution

In its five-day forecast, Kenya Met outlined regions likely to receive rains:

  • Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and Rift Valley: These regions are expected to experience morning rains, with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
    Specific areas include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
  • Nairobi and Surrounding Counties: Nairobi and neighboring counties such as Nyandarua, Nyeri, Laikipia, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi are expected to receive rainfall during the first half of the week. Afternoon and night showers may occur over several areas, gradually reducing towards the second half of the forecast period.

Rising Temperatures

Kenya Met also projected a rise in temperatures, with daytime highs surpassing 30°C in the following areas:
Mombasa, Mtwapa, Malindi, Lamu, Msabaha, Voi, Makindu, Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Moyale, Lodwar, and Wajir.

Meanwhile, cooler nights with temperatures dropping below 10°C are expected in the Central Highlands, Central and South Rift Valley, and parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands.

Residents are advised to plan accordingly and stay updated with local weather alerts to mitigate the effects of extreme weather conditions.
