Multinational Security Support (MSS) Mission Force Commander Godfrey Otunge delivered a hopeful New Year’s message to the residents of Haiti on January 1, 2025, pledging continued efforts to restore peace and co-existence in the nation.
In his statement, Otunge reflected on Haiti’s history, invoking the legacy of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the Creole emperor who declared the country’s independence on January 1, 1804. Otunge vowed to uphold the ideals of sovereignty and security that Dessalines envisioned for the nation.
“The future of Haiti is bright, reflecting the vision and aspirations of Jean-Jacques Dessalines, the father of the nation. His unwavering commitment to Haiti’s sovereignty and security continues to inspire us all,” Otunge stated.
He extended wishes of hope and prosperity to all Haitians as they celebrated both the New Year and their Independence Day, promising to work together to build a peaceful and thriving Haiti.
Commander Otunge also expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and the Haitian people for their support of the Kenyan peacekeepers under the MSS mission.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Transitional Presidential Council, the Prime Minister, and the Haitian population for their continued support and cooperation. Your commitment to our joint mandate, aimed at supporting the Haitian National Police (HNP) in restoring national security, has been invaluable,” he said.

Otunge praised the progress made by the MSS mission in collaboration with the HNP, highlighting efforts to secure critical infrastructure such as the international airport, national hospital, and main seaport in Port-au-Prince.
Joint patrols with the HNP in key areas of Port-au-Prince, including downtown, have bolstered the protection of civilians, Otunge noted. These measures have significantly improved public safety and contributed to regional stability.
Despite ongoing challenges, Otunge emphasized that the mission remains committed to eradicating gang violence and fostering a secure environment for the Haitian people.
“As we enter 2025, our shared sacrifices and hard work renew our hope and determination to achieve greater prosperity for Haiti. Together, we will build a safe, secure, and successful future for this nation,” he reiterated.
