Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga has expressed confidence in Kenya’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team trailing Group F leaders Ivory Coast by five points.
Kenya currently occupies fourth place in the group with five points, while Ivory Coast leads with ten after four matches.
Harambee Stars will take on Gambia on Thursday, March 20, with the match set to be played in Ivory Coast due to the absence of a CAF-approved venue in Gambia. The team will then return home to face Gabon on Sunday, March 23, at Nyayo National Stadium.
Speaking to FKF Media before their departure to Ivory Coast, Olunga expressed optimism about Kenya’s chances in the upcoming fixtures.
“The new coach believes in the players, and everyone is looking forward to these two fixtures. The group is still open for us,” he stated.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in ensuring the team is well-prepared for the matches.
“We want to thank the federation, led by President Hussein Mohamed and Vice President McDonald Mariga, for providing a conducive environment for us to train. We will go out and give our best. It’s a new coach, new federation, and the dynamics are different, but we have to adapt,” Olunga added.
As Kenya gears up for its first international matches of the year, the striker emphasized that the entire squad is eager to compete.
“Most of the players have reported to camp, and the mood is amazing. We are all looking forward to the first assignments of the year,” he said.
While acknowledging the strength of Gambia, Olunga remains confident in Kenya’s ability to secure a positive result.
“Gambia is an emerging team on the continent with very good players. With good preparations, hard work, and God on our side, we are confident of getting positive results.”
The clash against Gambia is set for Thursday, March 20, at Stade Olympique Alassane Ouattara in Abidjan, with kick-off scheduled for 10:00 PM local time.
