Mass production car maker Volkswagen (VW) is resuming production in Kenya after a four-year hiatus, the South Africa VW CEO Martiner Bien has announced.
This is good news to an economy that had recently seen some closures of international brands manufacturing.
“The East African Community holds great promise and Volkswagen will expand operations in Kenya, including ICE, hybrid and electric vehicles,” Biene said whilst making the announcement.
And among the first to react to this early Christmas news is Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
“Kenya is open for business, and we recognize the vital role auto manufacturers play in achieving our industrialization strategy,” stressed Mudavadi when he met VW executives in Nairobi.
VW had started local production in Kenya in 2016 only to close two years later due to among other things, reduced aggregate demand for motor vehicles.
This move is believed to help with creating new job opportunities to the many young graduates being churned out of the Kenyan universities every year
