Vivo Energy Kenya has released test results from six service stations following public concerns over the quality of Shell V-Power.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 3, 2025, the fuel distributor announced that it had commissioned independent tests through Intertek Testing Services, a globally accredited laboratory.
According to Vivo Energy, the results confirmed that Shell V-Power in Kenya meets its intended Research Octane Number (RON) of 95.
“Vivo Energy Kenya, the exclusive distributor and marketer of Shell fuels and lubricants in Kenya, is committed to delivering high-quality products that meet and exceed industry standards,” the company stated.
“Following recent social media claims questioning the quality of Shell V-Power at select Shell service stations, we immediately commissioned independent tests through Intertek Testing Services. The results confirm that Shell V-Power in Kenya fully meets its intended RON of 95, reaffirming the high standards we uphold across our network,” the company added.
Test Results Across Service Stations
According to the statement, the Shell V-Power test results from the six stations showed:
- Limuru Road Service Station – RON 95.1
- Woodridge Service Station – RON 96
- Lavington Service Station – RON 95.9
- St. Austin Service Station – RON 95.7
- Argwings Kodhek Road Service Station – RON 95.7
- Kilimani Service Station – RON 95.9
Concerns Raised by Viral Video
The concerns stemmed from a video posted by Tanuki Garage, a content creator who tested fuel quality at various petrol stations in Nairobi.
The tests from seven different filling stations reportedly showed inconsistencies in Shell V-Power’s octane ratings, sparking widespread debate.
At Shell Limuru, V-Power recorded 87 Performance Octane Number (PON), while the station’s standard fuel had a higher 91 PON rating. Similarly, at Shell Lavington, V-Power recorded 87 PON, compared to the 90 PON of standard fuel.
Since higher octane numbers indicate better fuel performance—offering greater resistance to engine knocking—the video raised concerns that consumers were not getting value for money.
Vivo Energy’s Response
Following the viral video, Vivo Energy Kenya launched investigations to address the concerns.
“We take these claims seriously and have initiated a comprehensive investigation, including independent laboratory testing. We will provide further updates once our review is complete,” the company said in a statement.
Vivo Energy also reaffirmed that all its products adhere to strict quality standards and are categorized into two RON types:
- Unleaded fuel – RON 93
- Shell V-Power – RON 95
Additionally, the company assured customers that all its products undergo rigorous testing before being imported into the country.
