The escalating political instabilities in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the U.S. Embassy located in Kinshasa has asked all American citizens to evacuate the country as soon as possible. In addition, there will be a further reduction in embassy personnel along with the suspension of regular consular services like visa interviews.
Through an official statement dated Monday 3rd, the embassy released an advisory suggesting American citizens within the DRC to leave the country via commercial flights while it is still possible. The announcement also added that crossing borders is still allowed and N’Djili International Airport in Kinshasa is still operational.
“Due to the current security situation, the Embassy is advising all U.S. citizens in the DRC to leave the country immediately using commercial transportation. The Embassy will not be conducting visa interviews or offering routine consular services to U.S. citizens. Those planning to leave should ensure that their travel documents are in order and that essential belongings are packed in a bag that is easy to carry,” reads part of the statement
The Embassy further recommended that American citizens in the DRC take steps to make sure they are safe. People need to reassess individual security measures and have enough food and water in case they must stay indoors for a prolonged period. It is essential to have important travel documents and emergency items such as clothing and medications packed in a bag that is easy to carry.
The advisory also highlights the need for an individual directed emergency action plan that is self-sufficient and does not depend on the United States government. Citizens are urged to utilize other means of commercial transportation to exit the region with diplomatic staff being scaled down and services suspended, the U.S. government’s directive draws a clear image of the seriousness of the security risks in Kinshasa.
