The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has commended Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba for revoking the appointment of Prof. Amukowa Anangwe as the University of Nairobi Council chairperson. However, the union is now calling for the removal of the entire council.
According to UASU officials, dissolving the council would be a crucial step in addressing the numerous challenges facing the institution. Last Wednesday, the union’s UoN chapter issued a seven-day ultimatum to the CS, demanding the complete dissolution of the council and the appointment of a new team.
Speaking on the matter, UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga reaffirmed that the union would not back down from its demands and warned of a looming strike if the ultimatum is ignored.
“We will not tolerate the ongoing situation at the University of Nairobi. Revoking the chairperson’s appointment alone is insufficient. We demand the removal of the entire council,” Dr. Wasonga stated.
Echoing his sentiments, UASU UoN chapter chairperson Dr. Richard Bosire emphasized that the university still faced governance challenges and urged the CS to act swiftly in appointing a new team.
“The removal of one individual does not resolve the institution’s problems. We need a fresh team—leaders committed to serving public interests rather than exploiting university resources,” Dr. Bosire said.
UASU remains firm in its position, insisting that a complete overhaul of the council is necessary to restore proper leadership and governance at the University of Nairobi.
