Tottenham Hotspur right-back Djed Spence has poured cold water on hopes of representing Harambee Stars, affirming that his focus remains on playing for England’s Three Lions.
Born in England to a Kenyan mother, Spence was eligible to feature for both nations. Over the years, Kenya had hoped that the defender, previously overlooked by England, might choose to represent the national team. However, that now appears unlikely.
The 24-year-old has recently enjoyed a strong run in Tottenham’s squad, largely due to injuries in the team. Despite playing in an unfamiliar left-back role, he has impressed, sparking speculation that he could soon break into England’s squad.
Addressing his international ambitions, Spence made it clear that his dream is to play for England. However, he remains committed to his club performances while awaiting a national team call-up.
“Who doesn’t want to play for their country? That’s something I’m looking forward to. If I get called up, happy days. If I don’t, I’ll just keep working hard,” Spence told Football.London.
With England set to face Latvia and Albania in upcoming World Cup qualifiers, Spence admitted he has not yet been contacted by England’s technical bench.
“I haven’t heard from anyone. I’m just focusing on now. I just want to keep playing well and help the team win games,” he added.
The defender also expressed his support for Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou, who has come under scrutiny following a poor run of form. Spurs currently sit 13th in the league with 34 points, raising concerns among fans.
“Most definitely, we believe in what he wants us to do. We try to implement that in every game,” Spence stated.
“Of course, it’s not going to work in every game, but the manager has our full support. We’re all behind him, and we want to show that by winning games. We didn’t win today, but come next week, we’ll get the win.”
With his club career on an upward trajectory, Spence’s dream of wearing the Three Lions jersey may soon become a reality. However, his decision effectively ends any lingering hopes of him donning Kenya’s national colors.
