Srike along Thika Road near Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University students on Monday blocked sections of Thika Road, causing a massive traffic snarl-up near the Kahawa area.

Footage obtained by City Mirror showed heavy traffic as students erected boulders and lit fires on the highway to voice their frustrations.

According to Adero Reagan, a student representative for those residing outside campus, the protests were triggered by a two-week-long power outage at the institution.

Reagan explained that the student leaders had written to Kenya Power, the area Member of Parliament (MP), and the Member of County Assembly (MCA), but their appeals for electricity restoration had gone unanswered.

“For the last two weeks, we have not had power. We wrote to Kenya Power, the MP, and the MCA, and they promised to reconnect power within 48 hours, but nothing has happened,” he stated.

He warned that the protests would continue until their demands were met.

“If this is the way they want us to go, then we will also move in this direction. We have decided that there will be no business on Thika Superhighway until our demands are fully addressed,” Reagan added.

The demonstration disrupted transport activities along the busy highway as motorists were forced to seek alternative routes. Authorities are yet to issue a statement on the matter.
