Australia has announced a significant increase in visa application fees, with new rates taking effect from Monday, July 1, 2025. The changes, part of a broader immigration reform strategy, affect almost all major visa categories, including student, skilled migration, and partner visas.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, the updated fee structure reflects the government’s efforts to better align the migration system with national economic priorities, manage rising application volumes, and fund improved processing systems.
Sharp Fee Increases Across Key Visas
Under the revised fees, applicants for a Partner Visa will now pay AUD 9,365, making it the most expensive visa category. Student Visa fees have also surged to AUD 2,000, a substantial increase that could impact international enrolments.
Other visa categories affected include:
- Visitor Visa (Offshore): AUD 200
- Temporary Graduate Visa: AUD 2,300
- Skilled Independent 189 Visa: AUD 4,910
- Skilled Nominated 190 Visa: AUD 4,910
- Skilled Work Regional 491 Visa: AUD 4,910
- Training 407 Visa: AUD 430
- Skills in Demand 482 Visa: AUD 3,210
- Employer Nomination Scheme 186 Visa: AUD 4,910
- Visitor Visa (Onshore): AUD 500
The government said the new rates are designed to reflect the administrative costs involved and ensure that those who benefit from the migration program contribute fairly.
The new fees have drawn mixed reactions. Education providers warn that the increased student visa cost could deter prospective learners, particularly from emerging economies like India, Kenya, and Nepal, which have traditionally sent high volumes of students to Australia.
Migration experts have also flagged concerns over affordability for families and skilled workers, especially in low-income professions.
