The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an alert for moderate to heavy rainfall across various parts of the country, warning of potential very heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm within 24 hours in some areas.
The forecast, covering Monday, November 25, to Wednesday, November 27, calls for vigilance, particularly in regions prone to heavy downpours.
The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are forecasted to have rains and thunderstorms. Counties likely to be affected include:
- Western Kenya and Lake Basin: Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira.
- Rift Valley Counties: Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, West Pokot.
- Western Highlands: Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia.
The North-Western region, including Turkana and Samburu counties, is also expected to experience showers and thunderstorms over a few areas.
Morning rain, with afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, is expected in:
- Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka counties.
- North-Eastern Kenya: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties are likely to experience morning rains, with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings.
- South-Eastern Lowlands: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, as well as inland Tana River County, will see similar weather patterns.
- Coastal Region: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal Tana River County are forecast to have showers on Monday and Tuesday, while Wednesday will feature sunny intervals, afternoon showers, and partly cloudy evenings.
The department has also projected warmer-than-usual temperatures nationwide, with Central and Eastern Kenya expected to experience the most significant deviations.
Kenya Meteorological Department has urged residents in affected areas to stay alert for potential flooding and exercise caution. The department will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety.
