National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula

Members of Parliament will interrupt their long recess following National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s announcement of a special sitting scheduled for Thursday, January 16, 2025.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, January 8, Wetang’ula confirmed that the National Assembly will hold two sittings on the designated day: a morning session starting at 10:00 a.m. and an afternoon session beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The agenda includes deliberating on the Committee on Appointments’ report regarding its review of nominees for Cabinet Secretary positions.

“On January 3, 2025, I received and acceded to a request from the Leader of the Majority Party to appoint Thursday, January 16, 2025, as a day for Special Sittings of the National Assembly.

“It is hereby notified to all Members of the National Assembly and the general public that Thursday, January 16, 2025, has been appointed as a day for Special Sittings of the National Assembly. The sittings will be held in the National Assembly Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, commencing at 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. for the morning and afternoon sessions, respectively,” Wetang’ula stated.

The special sittings will also include debates on:

  • The report by the Departmental Committee on Labour concerning nominees for appointment as chairperson and members of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
  • The report by the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations on its review of nominees for appointment as high commissioners, ambassadors, permanent representative, and consul-general.

Additionally, the mediated version of the County Governments Additional Allocations Bill (Senate Bill No. 19 of 2024) will be tabled for discussion.

Speaker Wetang’ula further noted that the House may consider any other priority business certified as urgent during the sittings.
