Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has adopted Baby James, a three-year-old boy who witnessed the brutal murder of his father in Mathare on Monday, January 20, 2025.

In a heartfelt statement, Sonko expressed gratitude to God for bringing Baby James into his family. “I thank God for blessing me with another son. Baby James, the child whose father was stabbed to death by thugs as he helplessly watched on Monday morning in Mathare Area 4 while being taken to school, will now be part of my family,” said Sonko.

Sonko pledged to provide the boy with emotional and educational support. He announced plans to engage professional therapists to help the child recover from the trauma of losing his father in such a horrific manner.

“My special thanks to Mr. Victor Owiti, Sub-County Children’s Officer Mathare; Christine Dembah, Senior Chief Mathare; Agness Nganga, Assistant Chief Utalii; Sophia Akinyi, Shofco Gender Champion, Mathare; and Margaret Nzuki, CPV Utalii, for taking good care of the boy since his father was murdered,” Sonko said.

He also assured that Baby James would continue his education in a new school. “Since the child is traumatised, I will engage the services of a professional therapist to aid in his healing journey. Thereafter, he will continue with his education at a school of my choice.

“May God comfort and protect him during this difficult period. May the Lord rest his father’s soul in eternal peace,” Sonko added.

Father’s Gruesome Death

Baby James became an orphan after his father, 32-year-old Michael Oworo, was stabbed to death by a knife-wielding assailant. The incident occurred as Oworo escorted his son to a daycare centre before heading to work at a construction site.

Eyewitnesses rushed to the scene only to find Oworo lying in a pool of blood as his son cried beside him.

Police revealed that the deceased may have attempted to fight back, leading to fatal injuries. However, the motive behind the attack remains unclear. “The body had a stab wound on the chest inflicted by a sharp object. The motive of the murder is yet to be established,” police stated.
