President William Ruto has elaborated on his decision to meet with his predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta. Speaking in Wajir County on Tuesday, December 10, Ruto stated that the meeting aimed to address their differences stemming from the 2022 general election.
According to the President, the outreach was part of efforts to foster unity and strengthen the country’s cohesion. He emphasized the importance of all Kenyans working together despite past disagreements.
“I have said that there is no need to continue with the politics of discrimination. We do not want tribalism or unnecessary divisions. We want one Kenya,” Ruto stated during the rally.
He further revealed that his recent engagements included discussions with Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and former President Kenyatta, underscoring his commitment to reconciliation and nation-building.
“Yesterday, I also spoke with former President Uhuru Kenyatta so that we can close our ranks, walk together, and build our country as one,” he added.
Ruto’s remarks came a day after his surprise visit to Kenyatta, who had opposed his presidential bid in the last election. According to State House, their discussions centered on issues of national and regional importance, including Raila Odinga’s candidacy for the African Union Commission.
In a statement, the Office of the 4th President confirmed that the two leaders addressed concerns raised by Kenyans, such as taxation and the reconstitution of the electoral body.
“President Uhuru agreed to be consulted privately or otherwise in efforts that lead to a hopeful, prosperous, united, and stable nation,” read the statement.
On his part, President Ruto emphasized the need to engage all stakeholders to reduce tensions and foster reconciliation. He stressed that the electoral disputes of the past were over and called for a collective focus on building the future as one people.
