President William Ruto on Friday, January 10, reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the challenges facing Moi University, including its leadership issues.

Speaking during the official opening of Ngeria TTI in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County, the President assured stakeholders that his administration would take decisive steps to restore the institution’s former glory once all its challenges are identified.

“Once we have a clear understanding of the problems affecting the institution, my administration will begin implementing solutions to help Moi University regain its status. This includes restructuring the university’s leadership and ensuring adequate funding to sustain its operations,” President Ruto stated.

He called for patience as his government works towards lasting solutions to revive the struggling university.

Leaders accompanying the President, including Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, echoed his sentiments and urged immediate action to prevent the university from collapsing.

“I appeal to you, Mr. President, not to let Moi University fall under your watch. I also urge you to allocate adequate funds, eliminate corruption, and ensure effective leadership to benefit the residents and the institution,” Cheruiyot remarked.

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago added his voice, emphasizing the need for additional hostels to accommodate the growing student population at Moi University.

President Ruto has previously addressed the issues plaguing Moi University. During his State of the Nation address on November 21, 2024, he criticized the university’s leadership and directed an immediate resolution of the crisis, which had resulted in an 86-day closure.

“The remaining challenges at universities like Moi University stem from internal administrative and governance issues, which I have instructed must be resolved,” he noted during the address.

Moi University Vice Chancellor Isaac Kosgey has since introduced several measures aimed at tackling the institution’s challenges. Key among them is optimizing resource mobilization and ensuring efficient use of resources to minimize waste in operations.

Kosgey also pledged to prioritize staff welfare by maintaining regular remittances for monetary deductions and establishing a comprehensive social and mental health support system for both staff and students.

With these efforts from both the government and university administration, Moi University stakeholders are hopeful for a turnaround in the institution’s fortunes.
