Ruto announces nationwide campaign to tackle femicide, Directs Police to Act Swiftly

Date:

President William Ruto has unveiled a nationwide campaign to address the alarming rise in femicide cases across Kenya.

Speaking at State House on Wednesday, November 20, the President announced the launch of the ‘Safe Home, Safe Space’ campaign, which will be spearheaded by women leaders in government institutions.

Ruto explained that the initiative aims to raise awareness of the warning signs of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and inform the public about safe spaces and avenues for assistance.

The campaign, set to run for 16 days, will coincide with the global 16 Days of Activism against GBV, starting November 25. To support the effort, the President pledged Ksh100 million in funding.

“We are launching the Safe Home, Safe Space campaign during the 16 days of activism against GBV that will begin on November 25,” Ruto announced.

The President also urged parents and young girls to exercise caution on social media, warning that some criminals are exploiting online platforms to target victims.

President Ruto further directed law enforcement agencies to expedite investigations into femicide cases and hold perpetrators accountable.

“I have instructed the criminal justice actors to execute their mandate without delay, holding perpetrators of femicide fully accountable,” he stated.

He also emphasized the need to enhance gender desks in police stations to ensure victims receive timely support. Additionally, the President revealed plans to introduce gender desks in hospitals to provide immediate care for survivors.

“Gender desks in police stations must be enhanced, and we will soon establish similar desks in hospitals to ensure victims receive immediate attention and care,” he said.

The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing GBV and supporting survivors as the nation grapples with the rising cases of femicide.
