ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga has pledged a cash reward to Harambee Stars players following their one-nil victory against Zambia at Kasarani Stadium.
In a statement on Sunday, August 17, ODM announced that Raila promised to give each player Ksh500,000 for their win.
“Party Leader Raila Odinga has promised to give Harambee Stars Ksh500,000 each after beating Chipolopolo of Zambia 1-0 at an entertaining match staged at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Together with President William Ruto, they visited the team after the game,” the statement read.
Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris praised Raila’s pledge and President William Ruto’s earlier promise, terming the gestures as a show of unity in celebrating Kenya’s sporting success.
“Following Harambee Stars’ emphatic victory over Zambia, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga has pledged Ksh500,000 to each player, a gesture of immense appreciation for their stellar performance. Coupled with President William Ruto’s earlier commitment of Ksh2.5 million, these rewards underscore the nation’s deep pride and unwavering support for our football heroes. Kenya stands united behind Harambee Stars as they march toward continental glory. Let the momentum soar,” she stated.
Earlier, President Ruto had promised Ksh2.5 million for each player if they beat Zambia, and an additional Ksh1 million plus a two-bedroom affordable housing unit should they advance past the quarter-finals.
“We’ve also agreed on rewards: A win against Zambia next Sunday will earn each player Ksh2.5 million. If they triumph in the quarter-finals, each will be gifted Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit in a location of their choice,” Ruto said.
Following the victory, the president congratulated Harambee Stars for defying expectations and inspiring the nation.
“At the beginning of the CHAN tournament, no one gave our Harambee Stars a chance of going past the group stages. After all, we were in the so-called ‘Group of Death.’ Yet, our boys triumphed. Congratulations, Harambee Stars! You have done the nation proud, inspired immense joy, and united our country in celebration. Now, march forward and conquer the continent. Do not settle for less — just as we, as a nation, must never settle for anything less than glory. As for me — I will play my part. After all, the cure for debt is paying it off,” Ruto stated.
