A major power outage hit the country at midnight, plunging most parts of Kenya into darkness.

Reports indicate that the blackout disrupted internet connectivity for many organizations operating 24 hours.

“We are experiencing a widespread power outage affecting most of the country, except parts of the Western and North Rift regions. The cause of this outage is yet to be determined,” Kenya Power stated in a release issued at 1:28 a.m.

At 7:35 a.m., Kenya Power announced that electricity supply had been restored to most areas across the country.

The utility company confirmed that power had been successfully restored in North Rift, Central Rift, Western Kenya, South Nyanza, Nairobi, and sections of the Mount Kenya region.

The outage, which is the latest in a series of recurring power disruptions in the country, was reported to have affected most regions, sparing only parts of Western and North Rift, which continued to have an uninterrupted power supply.

Kenya Power appealed to its over 9.6 million customers for patience, assuring them that efforts were underway to fully restore power across the remaining areas.

This latest incident brings back memories of the longest nationwide power outage in Kenya, which occurred on August 25 last year. At the time, Kenya Power attributed the blackout to Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP), while LTWP shifted the blame to the national power grid for causing the disruption.
