Pope Francis has been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital after a five-week stay for pneumonia treatment, marking his first public appearance since his hospitalization. The 88-year-old pontiff, who was admitted on February 14 due to a severe respiratory infection, waved to well-wishers from a balcony before his release.

The Pope’s health has been under scrutiny in recent years, and this latest illness was considered one of the most severe health crises of his 12-year papacy. Upon leaving the hospital, Francis smiled and acknowledged a group of well-wishers gathered outside. However, he appeared visibly weakened, with a swollen face and a frail voice, speaking only briefly.

His doctors have emphasized the need for a slow recovery, prescribing two more months of rest at the Vatican. As he was driven away from the hospital in a police-escorted convoy, the pontiff made a brief stop at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, where he frequently prays.

In a statement prepared by the Vatican, Pope Francis reflected on his time in the hospital: “In this long period of hospitalization, I have had the opportunity to experience the patience of the Lord, which I also see reflected in the faces of doctors and healthcare workers.”

During his hospitalization, the Pope had been relying on oxygen assistance and had not been able to deliver his usual weekly prayer. However, on Sunday, he resumed his public blessings and offered a short prayer in St. Peter’s Square. Pilgrims and well-wishers at the Vatican expressed relief and joy at his recovery, with many having prayed for his health throughout his hospital stay.

While Francis has returned to his official residence, Vatican officials remain cautious about his health, ensuring that he follows medical advice for a full recovery. Despite his frailty, the Pope’s resilience continues to inspire millions worldwide.
