The National Police Service (NPS) has launched investigations into the chaotic incident that disrupted a funeral service in Limuru on November 28, 2024.
The fracas broke out during the funeral of the late Erastus Nduati at Bibirioni Boys High School when unidentified individuals began hurling objects and chairs, forcing mourners, including children, to flee for safety.
According to a statement from the NPS, the incident occurred as former Limuru MP Peter Mungai Mwathi was addressing the gathering. However, the police have clarified that Mwathi is not a person of interest in the investigations.
“The National Police Service did not arrest Hon. Peter Mwathi, and he is not a person of interest to the Police,” read the statement signed by NPS spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango.
The chaos reportedly caused damage to property, though only one formal complaint has been received so far.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Limuru have already begun recording statements from family members of the deceased and other witnesses to establish the cause of the disruption.
The police have also appealed to members of the public with any information regarding the incident to report to the nearest police station to aid in apprehending the perpetrators.
“This insensitive act disrupted a solemn occasion, and we are committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” the statement further emphasized.
The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to serving and protecting all Kenyans while urging calm as investigations continue.
The clarification by NPS came after Gachgau’s allies camped outside the DCI Headquarters seeking to establish the whereabouts of the former lawmaker.
The allies of the former DP had alleged that Mwathi had been abducted by police officers.
On his part, Gachagua claimed that the chaos was planned to cause him physical harm.
