PCS Mudavadi orders fresh crackdown on all Matatus

Date:

Prime Cabinet Secretary and acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has directed all traffic officers to ensure that Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) are roadworthy and driven with care.

In a statement on Friday, November 15, Mudavadi instructed officers to verify that all PSVs display the registered name of their Sacco, company, or institution. He also emphasized the importance of checking each vehicle’s inspection status, valid road service license, and adherence to their licensed routes.

“I hereby instruct all traffic police officers to ensure that all PSVs are roadworthy and are driven safely. They must ensure that all the PSVs on the road have the registered name of the Sacco/company/institution, have inspection status, and operate from their licensed routes. Also important is that each PSV must have a valid Road Service Licence,” Mudavadi stated.

The Prime CS issued this directive while offering his condolences to the families of 13 victims who died in a recent road accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega road. Mudavadi urged all road users to be extra cautious, especially as the festive season approaches, to prevent further tragedies.

“As we approach the festive season, I urge all road users to exercise extra caution and vigilance to ensure the safety of all of us. With our students sitting for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams and Kenyans preparing for the festivities, I would like to urge all motorists to be especially careful on our roads,” he said.

Mudavadi also highlighted the alarming rise in road accidents this year, which has led to more fatalities and injuries.

“Between January and November, we have lost 4,047 people, compared to 3,726 during the same period last year. There have been a total of 20,369 accidents, compared to 19,262 in 2023. Among these accidents, there were 10,124 serious injuries, up from 9,059 last year,” he added.
