The Office of the Clerk of the National Assembly has formally requested the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate Members of Parliament and parliamentary committees over allegations of corruption, unethical conduct, and extortion.
In a letter dated August 20, 2025, Clerk of the National Assembly Samuel Njoroge disclosed that numerous complaints have been received implicating MPs and committees in practices that undermine the integrity of Parliament. The allegations include Members of Parliament engaging in corrupt practices contrary to Chapter Six of the Constitution and the Leadership and Integrity Act.
The letter further claims that some committees have been accused of extorting public institutions, private entities, and individuals under the guise of parliamentary oversight. According to Njoroge, such actions erode public confidence in Parliament and contravene the constitutional values and principles of governance under Article 10.
The Clerk has urged the EACC to:
- Commence investigations without delay.
- Establish the extent of corruption and extortion within Parliament.
- Recommend appropriate legal and administrative action against culpable members.
Njoroge assured the Commission of the National Assembly’s full cooperation, including providing access to relevant records, proceedings, and any other information needed to facilitate the investigations.
This move comes amid growing public concern over accountability and transparency in Kenya’s legislative arm, with the Clerk emphasizing that decisive action is necessary to restore confidence in Parliament’s oversight role.
