Azimio coalition lawmakers have been urged to assert their rightful position in Parliament following a High Court ruling on February 7, 2025, which overturned National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s October 6, 2022, decision that declared President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority.
Siaya Governor James Orengo has weighed in on the ruling, suggesting that it raises questions about the legitimacy of the 2022 presidential election results. Speaking on Saturday, Orengo argued that Azimio securing the majority in Parliament contradicts the outcome of the presidential race.
“What the High Court confirmed is that the election results announced in 2022 were not accurate. How could Raila’s party and coalition have secured the majority in Parliament but still lose the presidency?” Orengo questioned.
He called on ODM and Azimio lawmakers to take advantage of the ruling and reclaim their majority status instead of engaging in negotiations with the ruling coalition.
“I urge my party, ODM, to stand firm on this court declaration. Do not abandon it. The court has affirmed that Azimio is the majority in Parliament—this is not something to negotiate over,” he stated during the burial of Richard Ochieng’ Oloo, father to city lawyer Willis Otieno.

Echoing Orengo’s remarks, Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi said the ruling provides Azimio MPs with a unique opportunity to initiate impeachment proceedings against President William Ruto.
According to Wanjigi, ODM and the Azimio coalition must act before March 2025, warning that failure to do so will prompt a fresh political strategy.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti, who was also present at the burial, took the opportunity to urge the Luo community to rally behind Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka in his 2027 presidential bid.
