Nation Media Group (NMG) Managing Director (Audiences and Engagement), Oliver Mathenge, has announced his departure from the media house.
In a reflective statement on Thursday, December 26, Mathenge highlighted his nine-year journey at NMG, which he served in two distinct stints.
The seasoned journalist, who most recently held the role of Managing Director, joined the Kimathi Street-based media house in 2007 as a news journalist, a role he held for five years before leaving. He returned in December 2021 for his second stint, during which he climbed the ranks to become Managing Editor in April 2023.
Reflecting on his tenure, Mathenge described his time at NMG as a period of “learning, collaboration, and transformation.”
As NTV Multimedia Editor, Mathenge led several key initiatives that contributed to the company’s digital growth. Notably, he spearheaded the development of the NTV Kenya website, transforming it into a valuable platform for diverse content.
During his time as Managing Editor, Mathenge focused on audience engagement and digital innovation. He chaired the task force that created the NMG Artificial Intelligence Framework and represented the organization on the Media Council of Kenya’s working group for AI guidelines.
Mathenge expressed pride in the strides made during his tenure and gratitude for the lessons and relationships he cultivated.
Before his return to NMG in 2021, Mathenge worked at Radio Africa Group from 2012. He began as a Parliamentary Reports Editor and was later promoted in May 2017 to Digital Editor, a position he held until November 2021.
Mathenge holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications (Electronic and Print Media) from Daystar University and a Diploma in Management Information Systems from Strathmore University.
While he has not revealed his next career move, Mathenge indicated his enthusiasm for continuing to contribute to the ever-changing media industry.
