The National Police Service has announced a significant reshuffle affecting several senior officers in a move aimed at enhancing operational efficiency within the force.
Dr. Resila Onyango, the outgoing National Police Service spokesperson, has been transferred to the Diplomatic Police Unit, where she will serve as the commandant.
Replacing her as the new police spokesperson is Michael Nyaga Muchiri, who previously served as the Kiambu Police Commander.
In other changes, Coast Regional Police Commander George Sedah has been reassigned to Nairobi in the same capacity, taking over from Adamson Bungei.
Bungei, a long-serving officer in Nairobi, has been recalled to police headquarters and appointed as the Director of Operations, replacing William Yiampoy. The future assignment for Yiampoy remains unclear.
Meanwhile, Kwale County Police Commander Ali Nuno has been promoted to Coast Regional Police Commander, stepping into the role left by Sedah. Known for his no-nonsense approach, Nuno expressed readiness to tackle challenges in the region, including addressing the rising threat of criminal gangs.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) also witnessed notable changes. Amos Omuga, previously head of legal at the DCI, has been moved to the National Police Service headquarters at Jogoo House, where he will continue in his legal capacity. Dr. Mwangi Wanderi, formerly in charge of the National Forensics Laboratory at the DCI headquarters, has been transferred to Vigilance House as the Director of Human Capital. Wanderi replaces Rosemary Kuraru, who has been reassigned as the head of the National Forensics Laboratory.
Michael Sang, who led the Serious Crime Unit at the DCI, has been appointed Eastern Regional Head of the DCI. Daniel Korir, the Eastern Regional Head of DCI, has been transferred to the Kenya Airports Police Unit (KAPU) as the Commandant.
In community policing, Judy Jebet has been named the new head, succeeding John Gachomo, who has been redeployed to police headquarters. Additionally, Rhoda Kinanu, the outgoing Commandant of the Diplomatic Police Unit, has also been moved to police headquarters for redeployment.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja described the changes as routine, emphasizing their role in strengthening service delivery and operational capacity.
These adjustments come amid heightened security challenges in Mombasa, where criminal gangs wielding crude weapons have been a growing concern. The appointment of Nuno to the Coast region is seen as a strategic move to curb the escalating menace.
Nuno welcomed the changes, pledging to serve diligently and address the pressing issues in his new jurisdiction.
