NTSA cautions road users ahead of school reopening

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has impounded a school van and a bus found operating without valid motor vehicle insurance in Nyeri and Tharaka Nithi counties, respectively.

The vehicles were seized during an ongoing nationwide operation aimed at ensuring the safety of learners as schools reopen.

In a statement, NTSA revealed that the driver of the school van fled during the operation, and efforts to apprehend him are underway.
“School van operating without motor vehicle insurance impounded. The driver is at large, and efforts to apprehend him are ongoing,” read part of the statement.

The NTSA emphasized the importance of compliance checks to combat road accidents and safeguard children’s lives. Working alongside other agencies, including the State Department for Transport, the authority has continuously called on road users to prioritize the safety of schoolchildren.

Parents have also been warned against allowing their children to use non-compliant public service vehicles for school transport. The NTSA reiterated its commitment to conducting routine inspections to ensure vehicles transporting children are roadworthy and meet legal standards.

“As schools reopen, all road users are urged to prioritize the safety of children traveling to and from school by adhering to the Highway Code, reducing speed, and driving cautiously. All vehicles transporting children should be roadworthy, insured, and equipped with proper safety features,” stated the State Department for Transport.

The ongoing crackdown is part of NTSA’s larger strategy to enhance road safety across the country and hold operators accountable for any violations of traffic regulations.
