Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans for a major political comeback in January 2025 after holding consultations with like-minded leaders and residents from the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking during a church service in Murang’a on Sunday, Gachagua revealed that his fallout with President William Ruto has given him time to re-strategize his next political move.
The former DP criticized President Ruto for allegedly supporting his ouster, claiming it exposed the President’s true character. He vowed that his political comeback would be deliberate and well-calculated.
“We, the Mt. Kenya people, detest two things: lies and betrayal. This coming January, after consultations, we will announce the next steps. Never again shall we find ourselves in the situation we are in,” Gachagua declared.
He added, “President Ruto, my friend, did a good thing by bringing this fight to me and the people of the mountain because now we know him. We will now engage him with the respect he deserves as we understand who he truly is.”
Gachagua said he has been engaging church leaders, businesspeople, professionals, and other like-minded individuals committed to the welfare of Mt. Kenya residents.
“It’s better this happened early because if it were in the second term, it would have been worse,” he remarked.
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has maintained a critical stance toward the government, attributing his removal from office to his opposition to controversial government policies. He accused some leaders of being bribed to support his impeachment.
“MPs went ahead and passed the Finance Bill 2024. I was the only one in Cabinet who stood against it. The President said, ‘You don’t have to do what’s popular; you do what’s right.’ But the majority of Kenyans are saying it is not right,” Gachagua noted.
He also criticized the government for its alleged mistreatment of religious leaders, urging President Ruto to heed their concerns rather than dismiss them. Speaking at a church service in Kajiado County on November 17, Gachagua warned that the current administration risks repeating the mistakes of former President Daniel Arap Moi, who allegedly persecuted religious leaders.
Additionally, Gachagua accused the government of harassment and intimidation, alleging that security agents in unmarked vehicles have been monitoring his movements around his Nairobi and Nyeri homes.
“They park at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, take note of my visitors, and trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to Nyeri,” he alleged in a past statement.
However, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dismissed these claims, describing them as a misrepresentation of the agency’s actions and intentions.
