Nakuru Girls High School has been closed indefinitely following unrest linked to end-of-term examinations.
The chaos erupted on Tuesday, July 22, after students expressed dissatisfaction with the exam schedule. Attempts to have the timetable revised were rejected by the school administration, sparking a rampage that resulted in the destruction of property of unknown value.
School Principal Rose Menjo announced the indefinite closure on Wednesday, sending all students home.
This incident comes just days after similar unrest at Kaplong Girls High School in Bomet County, which was also closed indefinitely. The chaos there followed allegations of sexual misconduct by a male teacher, who was accused of grooming and engaging in romantic relationships with students.
The claims were made by a group of former students, some of whom shared personal encounters. The situation prompted a protest on Sunday, July 20, forcing Principal Clara Mitei to close the school until further notice.
In a separate incident on July 13, Lari Boys High School in Kiambu County was shut down after a fire destroyed key facilities including classrooms and the administration block. The blaze, believed to have been started by students, was reportedly sparked by a disagreement over access to musical instruments. Only the dormitories were left intact.
