A Nairobi Anti-Corruption Court has sentenced Police Inspector Susan Wambui Muiruri to two years in prison or a fine of Ksh. 550,000 for accepting a bribe to illegally free two suspects from custody. The ruling, delivered by Principal Magistrate Isabellah Barasa, found Muiruri guilty on two counts of bribery under Section 6 (1) (a) and Section 18 of the Bribery Act No. 47 of 2016.

The case stems from an incident on April 25, 2021, at Kasarani Police Station, where Inspector Muiruri, a member of the National Police Service, solicited and received Ksh. 10,000 from Donald Odhiambo Okumu. In exchange, she facilitated the unlawful release of suspects Juma Olunga Wakhayanga and Pamela Kajuju, who were being held in custody.

The prosecution, led by Kennedy Panyako, called nine witnesses to testify, securing Muiruri’s conviction after a thorough investigation. The court’s decision marks a significant step in addressing corruption within Kenya’s police force, with the magistrate emphasizing the breach of public trust in the officer’s actions.

Muiruri now faces the choice of serving her prison term or paying the substantial fine as the legal consequences of her misconduct take effect.
