Nairobi City County Chief Officer Health Facilities Geoffrey Mosiria

The Nairobi County Government has issued a notice to matatu owners due to disruptions caused by their activities during city cleaning operations.

Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria highlighted that matatu stages are often occupied at night, obstructing cleaning efforts. He also raised concerns about poorly maintained vehicles that contribute to environmental degradation.

Matatu owners have been instructed to ensure their vehicles vacate stages during cleaning hours and to maintain cleanliness, including subscribing to licensed waste management services. Additionally, Mosiria addressed noise pollution, urging drivers to avoid unnecessary hooting and loud music, and to promptly remove abandoned vehicles.

New Directives for Hawkers
The Chief Officer also warned hawkers to remove their wares by 10 p.m. daily to facilitate proper cleaning. Items left behind will be considered a nuisance and disposed of without notice.

These measures follow a decision on January 6, 2025, to relocate hawkers to designated backstreets, with operations limited to weekdays between 4 a.m. and 10 p.m. However, hawkers have expressed their intent to reject the new regulations.
