Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced plans to launch a new political party, revealing that a Gen Z leader will serve as his deputy.
Speaking during a roundtable discussion on Kamba-speaking radio stations on Wednesday, Gachagua emphasized that young people would play a central role in his party’s leadership.
He noted that it was no longer enough to refer to the youth as future leaders, arguing that they must be actively involved in shaping the country’s leadership today.
“My party will have significant youth representation. The deputy party leader will be a Gen Z. We need to stop telling them they are leaders of tomorrow—they are leaders of today. I also want to mentor them. I have the experience, they have the knowledge and creativity, and together, we can build a strong leadership team,” he stated.
Gachagua further claimed that many young people support him because he stood by them during a critical time, referencing the anti-government demonstrations led by Gen Z.
He insisted that his decision to speak up for the youth came at a heavy cost but affirmed that he remains committed to their cause.
“The day it mattered most, I spoke out for them. I did not wait until I was out of office to support them—I did it while still in government. Many young people trust me because they know I am honest and genuine,” he said.
He added, “Gen Z trust me because I took a stand when it counted, and I paid a heavy price for it. I have been persecuted for believing in the youth.”
Gachagua has also been holding talks with various political figures as he works to build alliances. He has so far met Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, NARC Kenya’s Martha Karua, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, among others.
Additionally, he has been engaging professionals, as well as current and former elected leaders, as he seeks to strengthen his political base.
