The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), associated with Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, has officially initiated the process of exiting the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
In a letter seen by CityMirror, dated Wednesday, March 12, the party issued a 30-day notice to quit President William Ruto’s ruling coalition, citing unfavorable political developments in the country.
According to DP Secretary General Jacob Haji, the decision was driven by the party’s assessment that remaining in Kenya Kwanza was no longer viable.
“Kindly take notice that our stay in Kenya Kwanza Coalition is no longer tenable due to the prevailing political developments. Democratic Party of Kenya, vide this letter, hereby gives a thirty (30) day notice to exit the coalition as stipulated in the termination clause (8) in the coalition agreement. The notice is effective from the date of this letter,” Haji stated in the letter.
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu confirmed that her office had received the notice on March 12.
The DP’s move comes amid speculation of an impending Cabinet reshuffle by President Ruto, reportedly aimed at accommodating allies of ODM leader Raila Odinga in government.
The Democratic Party was among the parties that joined Kenya Kwanza ahead of the 2022 General Election, with Muturi later being appointed as Public Service CS. However, recent political realignments and shifting alliances appear to have prompted the party’s decision to exit the coalition.
It remains unclear whether DP will align with another political outfit or operate independently as the country gears up for the 2027 elections.
