An incident at St. Anne’s Girls Secondary School in Makadara on Tuesday night, January 7, sparked outrage after students were reportedly locked out due to unpaid fees.
The students were left stranded outside the school gate for several hours, with the situation attracting widespread condemnation on social media.
One student, sharing her ordeal, said, “We’ve been sitting here since 10 am. I’ve paid half of the school fees, and I come from far.
They’re demanding around KSh 26,000, but even if you pay half, they still won’t let you in. So, what’s the point of even paying that half? We’ve been here all day without food since morning.”
The incident prompted concerned residents to raise the alarm on social media, leading to intervention from area Member of Parliament George Aladwa.
In an update, the MP confirmed that his team had been dispatched to the school and instructed the school management to allow the students to enter.
“Following reports that some students at St. Anne’s Girls Secondary School were stranded outside the premises, I immediately dispatched my team to assess the situation. I have since instructed the school management to grant access to the students, and I am pleased to confirm that the situation has been resolved, with all students now safely inside the school. Parents are kindly advised to remain patient and refrain from further concerns,” Aladwa said.
The incident sparked public outrage, with Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of the school’s principal.
“The Principal of St. Anne’s Girls’ School in Makadara should be arrested and charged for this mistreatment of young girls. How can you lock students out when some traveled from as far as Garissa?” Alai questioned.
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu also weighed in, expressing her shock at the principal’s actions. “The principal of St. Anne’s Makadara has shocked the nation. Imagine being so insensitive while caring for girls of high school age. Thank you, Hon. Aladwa, for intervening. It’s a sad day for the girl child,” she stated.
