The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has set up six official fan zones in Nairobi to ease congestion at Kasarani Stadium during Sunday’s CHAN 2024 clash between Harambee Stars and Zambia.

In a statement on Wednesday, FKF said fans without tickets can watch the match on big screens at Uhuru Park, Dandora Stadium, Jacaranda Grounds, Lucky Summer (behind Kasarani Stadium), Utalii (Stima Club), and Kibera DC Grounds.

“Missed out on tickets? No problem! Come catch the CHAN 2024 Zambia vs Kenya game LIVE from our fan zones,” FKF stated.

The move follows a directive by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya after Kenya was fined KSh 6.45 million by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for crowd trouble during last Sunday’s 1-0 win over Morocco.

During that match, ticketless fans broke gates, forced their way into the stadium, and accessed restricted areas, including media zones. CAF also criticised the use of teargas and stun grenades on supporters, as well as the inadequate number of security personnel.

As part of the penalty, attendance for Sunday’s game has been capped at 27,000 — 60 per cent of Kasarani’s capacity. Many fans have since complained online about being unable to secure tickets.

Before the Morocco fixture, Kenya had already been fined about KSh 2.5 million for security lapses during the opening match against DR Congo on August 3, including a stampede, unauthorised entry, and the assault and obstruction of officials and guests.

CAF has warned that continued breaches could lead to Kenya’s matches being relocated or a ban on hosting home games. The Local Organising Committee and government have been directed to run a public awareness campaign on the new safety rules.
