The Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Rural Private Hospitals Association (RUPHA) have reached a consensus following recent threats by RUPHA to withdraw from the Social Health Authority (SHA) program. This agreement ensures the uninterrupted provision of healthcare services to SHA beneficiaries across the country.
The agreement follows a period of tension between MOH and SHA over delayed payments and claims management issues. RUPHA had threatened to withdraw its services, citing unpaid dues and a lack of proper training on the newly introduced online claims system. This standoff raised concerns about the potential disruption of healthcare services for thousands of Kenyans reliant on SHA facilities.
In a consultative meeting held on February 24, 2025, between MOH officials and RUPHA leadership, key resolutions were made to enhance service provision in RUPHA-affiliated facilities. During the discussions, the government clarified that it does not owe RUPHA KES 30 billion, countering earlier assertions.
As part of the agreement, RUPHA facilities will receive comprehensive training on claim management to improve the accuracy of claim submissions and prevent delays. Additionally, RUPHA members have already been trained on using an online dashboard to access claims and track their payments efficiently as mentioned by the Ministry in their latest press statement on Tuesday evening.
The MOH recognized the critical role played by RUPHA and the Kenya Association of Private Hospitals (KAPH) in providing essential healthcare services to SHA beneficiaries.
