Martha Karua receiving a change of name certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu.

Martha Karua has officially ushered in a new chapter in her political journey with her Narc Kenya party undergoing a name change to the People’s Liberation Party (PLP).

The party received its new name certificate from the Registrar of Political Parties on Friday, January 31, marking the start of a strategic rebranding effort ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.

The name change reflects the party’s ambition to rally more support and position itself as a key contender in the upcoming race.

Karua, who has confirmed she will run for the presidency, emphasized that the new identity is designed to resonate with a broader electorate, particularly the youth and those disillusioned by the current Kenya Kwanza administration. The rebranding signals a call for “urgent and immediate liberation” from the present political order.

As part of the transformation, PLP has introduced a new logo, slogan, and color scheme.

The party has shifted from its former red and white hues to lilac, white, and purple, with the new slogan now reading “Unite” and “Liberate,” replacing the previous “One Kenya, One Nation, One People.”

The Registrar of Political Parties, Anne Nderitu, applauded the party’s adherence to legal processes and encouraged PLP to continue promoting nationalism and political rights in the country.

“I urge the party to promote nationalism and uphold the realization of political rights,” Nderitu stated during the certificate handover.

Karua’s move to rebrand her party comes at a time when the political landscape is shifting. Following the political rapprochement between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, cracks have emerged within the Azimio la Umoja coalition, and Karua has been actively seeking new alliances to broaden her political base.

She recently met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, fueling speculation of a new political coalition aimed at unseating President Ruto in 2027. Karua and Gachagua are particularly focused on capturing the youthful vote, which is seen as crucial for any candidate’s success in the upcoming elections.

Gachagua, who wields significant influence in the Mount Kenya region, has become a central figure in the 2027 political landscape following his impeachment. His growing importance has seen several Kenya Kwanza politicians shift allegiances, eyeing a fresh political direction under his leadership.

PLP’s rebranding and strategic moves suggest that Karua and her allies are gearing up for a competitive race in 2027, with the aim of positioning themselves as key players in Kenya’s future political direction.
