Motorists and boda boda riders in Homa Bay have been issued strict traffic and parking guidelines ahead of the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations set for June 1 at Raila Odinga Stadium.

Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa on Saturday outlined key directives aimed at ensuring smooth traffic flow and heightened security for the national event, which is expected to draw over 15,000 guests.

“We have detailed plans for crowd control, traffic diversions, emergency response, and designated parking to ensure safety and order during the celebrations,” said Mworoa.

Travellers from Kisumu and Kendu Bay heading to Mbita, Oyugis, Rongo, Kisii, and Migori will be diverted at Olare to Imbo–Rodi. Those travelling from Kisii, Migori, and Oyugis to Kisumu should use Rodi to Imbo and rejoin the main road at Olare.

Vehicles entering Homa Bay from Rodi but not attending the event will be diverted at Kodoyo/Mbita junction to the main matatu stage to ease congestion near the stadium.

Designated parking areas include Asego Comprehensive School, KMTC, Tourist Hotel, Got Rabuor Primary and Secondary Schools, and SDA Central Church. Buses will park at Homa Bay Primary School, while GOK vehicles will use the Homa Bay Police Station and County Commissioner’s office compound.

Roads around Raila Odinga Stadium, the State Lodge, and County Commissioner’s office will be closed to regular traffic, with access limited to dignitaries. Boda boda operators will be required to use the main matatu stage for parking.

Mworoa called on all road users to comply with the directives, noting that security and enforcement teams—including the National Police Service, Kenya Coast Guard Service, and emergency units—will be on the ground.

President William Ruto, Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga are among the top dignitaries expected at the celebrations, which Homa Bay officials say will boost the county’s visibility and development prospects.
