Prominent lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has offered to mediate a business dispute involving second-hand car dealer Khalif Kairo, who is currently facing fraud charges in court.
In a statement on X on Tuesday, January 14, Ahmednasir criticized the online backlash against Kairo, noting that financial struggles are a common challenge for businesses.
“I don’t know Khalif Kairo personally, but I see him on X occasionally. He has a small second-hand car business that has faced difficulties. It’s unfortunate to see people rejoicing in his misfortunes. Every business faces challenges,” Ahmednasir wrote.
Offering a solution, Ahmednasir proposed mediation between Kairo and the complainant to resolve the matter amicably.
“Taking him to court isn’t the way to treat young, aspiring Kenyans trying to succeed in a tough business environment. I’m willing to mediate and help resolve this matter,” he added.
Kairo’s Legal Troubles
Kairo was arraigned on Monday, January 13, accused of defrauding clients by failing to deliver vehicles after receiving payments. Among the charges, he allegedly received Ksh 2,984,998 for a Subaru Outback and Ksh 2,145,150 for a Honda Vezel, neither of which were delivered.
Through his lawyers Danstan Omari and Cliff Ombeta, Kairo has denied the allegations, attributing the complaints to jealousy from business rivals. The defense also disputed claims that Kairo intended to flee the country, explaining that a pre-booked business trip to New York was unrelated to the case.
Court Proceedings
The prosecution has raised concerns about Kairo potentially absconding, citing challenges in tracing him during investigations. They have requested that he remain in custody during the trial. Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina is expected to rule on Kairo’s bail application later today.
