Kenya Airways (KQ) has officially handed over a decommissioned Boeing 737-700 aircraft to Mang’u High School, fulfilling a 2023 donation pledge.

In a statement on Sunday, January 12, the airline announced that the aircraft aims to inspire students pursuing aviation studies at the institution.

“We are making history with the donation of a Boeing 737 to Mang’u High School, inspiring the next generation of aviators!” KQ stated.

During a handover ceremony at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Mang’u High School Principal John Kuria expressed gratitude to the national carrier.

Kuria described the delivery of the aircraft as the highlight of his career, coinciding with his upcoming retirement.

“We are extremely happy to receive this gift from Kenya Airways. It has been a journey that started in 2021, and today I am a happy man as the CEO of the school delivering the aircraft to its new home,” Kuria remarked.

“As I retire from the teaching service, this marks the climax of my teaching career. I will go home with my head held high, having steered the school to excellent performance and receiving the aircraft, which will revolutionize aviation studies at Mang’u High School.

“This aircraft will promote aviation studies and prepare young men for the Kenyan and global aviation industry,” he added.

Kenya Airways Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer Hellen Mathuka emphasized the aircraft’s educational purpose, highlighting its potential to inspire future professionals in the aviation field.

“This aircraft, once soaring the skies, now begins a new chapter as a learning resource to inspire and equip future aviators, engineers, and innovators,” Mathuka said.

The decommissioned Boeing 737-700 will be transported to Mang’u High School via the Eastern Bypass and Thika Road. Authorities have cautioned motorists to expect delays due to the transportation of a long abnormal load.

The donation underscores Kenya Airways’ commitment to supporting education and fostering innovation in Kenya’s aviation industry.
