Congolese Soukous and Rhumba maestro Koffi Olomide

Kisumu revelers were disappointed after the much-publicized Koffi Olomide show at Maboleo Stadium came a cropper with the King of Ndombolo turning on stage with a phone instead of a mic.

The Congolese maestro sang to playback sound instead of his Quartier Latin Band backing him up to the displeasure of many including those who paid a neat Sh 15,000 for the ticket.

Koffi sang as he continuously recorded himself and at times left the playback roll on his popular number as he just chanted, “Mopao” or Tachtchou” in between.

“How can I part with Sh 15,000 only to come and see Koffi alone on stage without a band. That’s a big joke,” complained one of the revelers who attended the packed event.

Among those in attendance included Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o who had earlier gone to the Kisumu International Airport to receive Mopao.

“When you saw Koffi landing without his crew it was rather obvious he wouldn’t be performing with the band. Or rather, Koffi’s band arrives two days ahead of his landing as they prepare for a show,” said another reveler on his Facebook Page.

“What happened was not usual and the organizers have an explanation to give,” said Kenyan diva Suzzana owiyo who apportioned the blame to Muzqa Festival organisers for just paying Koffi an appearance fee and not making a full disclosure to revelers.
