Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has launched an internal investigation following the shocking murder of a patient within its facility.
In a statement on Friday, KNH confirmed the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family, noting that details surrounding the circumstances of the patient’s death remain unclear.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm an incident involving the tragic death of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital. The hospital is working closely with law enforcement authorities and has launched an internal investigation to determine the facts surrounding this incident,” KNH Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. William Sigilai stated.
The hospital further assured the public of its commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all patients, staff, and visitors.
The victim, identified as Gilbert Kinyua, was reportedly found dead in his hospital bed during a routine check by a night nurse on Friday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest that he may have been murdered between the 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. rounds. Police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack.
Kinyua’s wife, Susan Wanjiku, expressed shock over the incident, revealing that she was called by the hospital to identify his body. She later learned that her husband had been murdered under mysterious circumstances.
“They called me and told me to go to the hospital to identify the body. After that, I was informed that his death was not natural—it was murder. His throat was slit. I do not know who did that beastly act,” Wanjiku told Citizen TV.
She added that authorities had advised her to wait for investigations to be completed before any further action is taken.
KNH reiterated that it is working closely with law enforcement agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, pledging full cooperation in the ongoing probe.
