Candidates of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination were unable to access their results on Thursday afternoon after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) website went down.

The results were announced shortly after noon by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, who stated that individual candidate results would be available on the KNEC portal at https://results.knec.ac.ke. Ogamba also advised candidates facing difficulties to use the toll-free numbers 0800724900 or 0800721410 for assistance.

However, moments after the announcement, the KNEC website became inaccessible, with users encountering error messages such as, “This page isn’t working” and “This site can’t be reached.” Attempts to reach the KNEC helpline numbers also proved futile, as calls could not be connected.

No Official Response from KNEC

By press time, KNEC had not issued an official statement regarding the technical issues. The outage sparked frustration among candidates and parents who were eager to access the results.

Change in Results Access Method

This year marked a shift from previous years when candidates accessed their results via SMS by sending their index numbers to a KNEC short code.

The current issues mirror a similar incident in 2023 when Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates were unable to access their results after the SMS service collapsed. At the time, those requesting results received messages stating the results were “not available” and advising them to “try again later.” KNEC later apologized for the inconvenience, citing technical challenges with their system.

Candidates and parents are now awaiting updates from KNEC on when the website will be restored to facilitate access to the 2024 KCSE results.
